2017 Annual Appeal: Stopping private infrastructure in national parks
Don't let developers take away chunks of our national parks - donate today to keep conservation at the heart of our national parks!
Right now the Queensland Government is actively pursuing proposals from developers to put commercial tourism facilities inside our national parks. This must be stopped – national parks were not created for the commercial gain of private companies. National parks belong to all of us, for all time.
Beautiful Lindeman Island, in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, is at risk, with developers wanting to build three resorts, and revoke 36.9 ha of national park land in the process. It is not just Lindeman – there is a line-up of projects that would see chunks of our public national park land in the hands of private developers. This is an unacceptable use of our national parks, a public asset put aside for the conservation of nature.
We need to tell the state government that our national parks are off limits to developers. National parks must remain protected, in perpetuity, in line with the cardinal principle of national park management: conservation. Our national parks exist to provide habitat to Queensland’s amazing plants and animals and to be enjoyed by the public. It is disturbing that the state government is wanting to parcel off sections for private development.
There is a tsunami of proposals coming, but NPAQ will be ready, with your help. Our 87-year history of advocating for the protection, expansion and good management of national parks shows we are committed to protecting Queensland's unique natural spaces. Our history proves our dedication and proficiency: in 1986 Lindeman Island was under threat of a large part being sold off, but NPAQ helped fight that proposal and won. Click here to see the NPAQ annual report entry from 1986.
The development proposals will keep coming, and we must keep fighting them. But we need your help to stop this threat to our treasured national parks. As a not-for-profit organisation, only with your financial assistance can we continue to lobby the government to abandon this reckless course of action, make submissions, inform the public, and track the development approvals process to ensure we are involved every step of the way.
Your donation will help us to tell the Queensland Government that conservation should be at the heart of national parks.
Thank you for your support.
