Romeo Lahey Memorial Lectures
The Romeo Lahey Memorial Lecture series honours the memory of the principal founder of this Association, Romeo Watkins Lahey MBE, ME. Born into a timber family with sawmilling interests around Canungra, he is remembered as a dedicated Conservationist who succeeded in having the wonderful rainforests of the Lamington Plateau and surrounds declared as a National Park in 1915. As a university student, and on vacations, he explored and photographed what became known as Lamington National Park.During other times he wrote persuasive letters to Members of Parliament to back up Robert Collins in his fight to have the area declared a National Park.
After the death of Romeo Lahey, the founder of NPAQ, the Council decided to commemorate his life and his contribution to NPAQ. At the Council meeting that was held on January 13, 1969 it was moved that as a memorial to the late Romeo Lahey, lectures were to be held bi-annually.
R Allen Clelland delivered the inaugural lecture on the ’Early Days in NPA’ in 1970. Since then many lectures have been presented and continue to be presented to date.
