FRASER ISLAND ( 20th July 2007 )
The National Parks Association of Queensland Inc (NPAQ) applauds Minister Nelson-Carr’s decision to close an 18 kilometre stretch of Hook Point Rd, on Fraser Island.
NPAQ recognises that this stretch of beach is a popular camping area as well as a breeding/nesting area for native birds. Closure of this stretch of beach is imperative for the safety of people camping and the sustainability of the birdlife.
NPAQ agrees with Minister Nelson-Carr’s comments regarding the opportunity for 4WD vehicles to access other parts of the beach. Given that the decision to close this stretch of beach coincides with the 1994 Great Sandy Region Management Plan, it is great to see the decision coming to fruition all these years later.
