Working Bees PDF Print

In order to assist Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to ensure that tracks in National Parks are well maintained and weeds are eradicated, NPAQ coordinates a number of working bees on an ongoing basis each year.

We would love you to help out, the more the merrier. For further information about how to become involved, or to register to assist, complete the ‘volunteer now’ form.

Regular working bees include Revegetation at Jolly’s Lookout and at Boombana in the D'Aguilar Range National Park behind Brisbane. This Revegetation Project has been existence for more than seventeen years and every month dedicated NPAQ members provide a day of their time to remove lantana and weeds from the areas and replant. Earlier work cannot be distinguished now from the original natural rain-forest.

Maintenance work and track building at Sundown National Park usually occurs once per year, with NPAQ members assisting with track construction, clearing, replacing posts and general maintenance. For further details, check out the News section of the website.

Some work will be forthcoming on the Mount Matheson trail in the Main Range NP.

Clean Up Australia Day - National Parks

In 1994 the Council of the Association decided to join the Clean Up Australia Day programme as an organisaton, concentrating on areas in and around National Parks. With the co-operation of Rangers from the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service two sites were chosen, one on the Eastern/Southern side and on on the Northern/Western side of Brisbane.

This proved most successful. It is amazing how much rubbish people try to hide in bushland; burned out car bodies, white goods, tires, cans, bottles and mattresses being common. The Rangers arranged transport of truckloads to the nearest appropriate dump and the morning finished with a sausage sizzle and a talk about the area.

This programme has continued and country members and Affiliated Associations are encouraged to undertake similar programmes with the support of their local QPWS Ranger.

However, in 2004, it was decided that March was too hot for such heavy physical work, especially as some members are in the senior category, so a day was chosen in June. With the co-operation of the local Rangers we have our own Clean Up National Parks Day.

Look up our Activities Programme to find the next working day or consider arranging your own Clean Up National Parks Day to help your bit of the environment.
